David Price - Painting Air

Pacini Lubel Gallery will exhibit the encaustic paintings by Northwest artist, David Price in the East Gallery from May 7th through May 30th. In this, the second solo show for David at Pacini Lubel, David presents a series of paintings that highlights the natural beauty of the Northwest landscape. Tortuous waterways lead into inlets, glimpses of mountains and hilly forests are viewed from the distance and the reflection of light is ever present. The encaustic overlay adds a level of depth, a slightly opaque surface that allows the viewer to see the landscape in an almost abstracted manner.
David writes: "I have pursued encaustics to create pieces that speak to a place that is somehow familiar and timeless. Transporting the viewer into the landscape is an inviting sense of depth, an image with a rich and layered surface that makes each piece look affected by the passage of time. My work responds to the concept of refuge and prospect. It is a basic human need and desire to seek out a secure and sheltered place, the refuge, looking out at a broad view, the prospect.
The gallery will present a group exhibition in the West Gallery. Tip Toland, Lanny Bergner, Meg Holgate, Geoffrey Laurence and Susan Madsen will have works on view. In addition, a series of five sculptures by Kathleen Holmes will be exhibited. Kathleen grew up in the South and watched her grandmother and mother create lace for their homes. The power of these women indelibly influenced Kathleen and her work incorporates the concept of the strength of woman. Imagery of dresses and lace are worked into glass and ceramic pieces to pay homage to these critical forces of our lives.
