Eric Bashor
November 6 - November 29, 2008
Pacini Lubel will exhibit paintings by artist, Eric Bashor from November 6th through November 29th in the East Gallery.
Eric Bashor is a widely heralded artist that developed his unique approach to painting here in the Northwest while studying at Cornish School for the Arts. His recognition began swiftly when he was conferred a Seattle Art Museum's PONCHO Special Recognition Award in 2000.
Eric Bashor's exhibition is titled "A Table in the Wilderness" and reinterprets major paintings from the 13th Century, to present. Artists like Johannes Vermeer, Jan Van Eyck, Caravaggio and Velazquez have been inspirational to Eric Bashor and he passionately explores and creates paintings that have specific references to these great masters. Still Lives, detailed portraiture, and "homescapes" are depicted in Eric's thickly applied, highly tactile paintings. The contemporary vision in concomitance with historical perspective is remarkably balanced and nuanced in this body of work.
Eric writes that "the paintings in this show present collisions between levels of representation. By arranging pages out of books and magazines the way other artist arrange objects on a table, the new work goes beyond a traditional depiction of space combining two a three-dimensional elements. Every painting achieves the fragmented and random association of imagery, typically associated with collage, by paraphrasing, reappropriating and juxtaposing fragments of famous paintings and images from mass media. The paintings give a nod to the frenetic way we interact with images in contemporary society, while preserving complete literalness. In the end, I hope the work challenges a linear sense of reality".
Please join us and Eric Bashor for the opening on Thursday, November 6th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
