Margaret Keeland and Joey Chiarello
July 3 - August 2, 2008

Pacini Lubel Gallery will exhibit the sculpture of two ceramic artists, Margaret Keelan and Joseph Chiarello from July 3rd through August 2nd in the East Gallery.

Both Margaret Keelan and Joseph Chiarello play with the concept of reality - they both present sculpture that evokes thoughtful contemplation. Margaret presents a series of figurative ceramic sculptures that create the illusion of decaying wood and peeling paint. Are the figures old Santos dolls? Are these figures old pieces of American Folk Art? Are these figures 19th century European dolls? In issue 70 of Ceramics: Arts and Perception, Cheryl Coon writes that " the most recent sculptures reference 19th Century dolls and the Santos figures of Mexico and Central America. The faces are reminiscent of colonial times, and at first they appear familiar, disconnected and ageless. However, the startling realization that these figures are made with clay that has been meticulously worked to create the illusion of decaying wood, disintegrating and peeling paint, pushes the work beyond mere representation. The figures act as guides, interpreters, questioners, and each viewer must then complete the riddle from his or her own perspective".

Joseph Chiarello develops his imagery from a deep fascination with nature and the vast expanse of expression one finds within the animal kingdom. Through the painting of imagery on the surface of each sculpture Joey creates a unique combination of emotional and visual stimulation that also leaves the viewer pondering the essence of each piece. The underpinnings of eastern philosophy are explored with the depiction of Buddha and Tara on a migratory elephant, the concept of emotional growth is depicted in several pieces - a pigmy owl and otter, the challenges of relationships are conveyed on a wild boar and a ready to pounce feline, and the maturation from child to adult is illustrated on the surface of a large and powerful canine.

The West Gallery will highlight the work of noted ceramist Michael Lucero as well as painter David Price and ceramist Tip Toland.

Please join us for the opening on Thursday, July 3rd from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
